Poetry of the Revolution : Responses to the Avant-Garde: 10/7
I'm not sure that Hannah Hoch was necessarily trying to express herself as much as the other women of the Dada movement. She seems to be poking fun at society. A lot of her work looks to be centered on how the media portrays the relationships between men and women. I think a lot of the media during her time was very discriminatory and unapologetic towards women and sort of mirrored the general consensus about women and what their place in society should be and how they should behave. The art of Hoch is similar to the poetry of Mina Loy and both show dadaist beliefs. Mina Loy has a line in her poem: "our person is a covered entrance to infinity, choked with the tatters of tradition." This is definitely a statement on Dada. When you think about how women were treated in society at the time and men as well, the line says that tradition keeps people from reaching their full potential.
