9/21

At first, this piece by Gertrude Stein had me completely confused. I had trouble grasping what she was saying because I keep saying to myself that it sounds like she’s just rambling. I had to take a break from it and when I came back an hour or so later, I re-read it. This time around, I took understood her writing to be stream of consciousness writing. This new style of writing includes some influences and is a response to the Cubist art movement of the time. In her writing, she uses a good amount of repetition, paired with simple images to get her point across. This piece hints at a feminist ideal but overall withholds any judgment. It is a very socially objective narration. You can see how she put some elements of humor and playfulness into her writing as well. Overall, I think this piece is somewhat strange, but I like it. I like to see how her train of thought connects all her different ideas together, I think it’s really interesting.
