After reading Gertrude steins poems, and her book "How To Write" i believe i really have very little understanding about her writing. Until i looked up her personal history on wikipedia and found that she had been a crucial person in a psychology study on automatic writing, writing while distracted so that the writing is believed to come from your stream of consciousness. This was in her collage days. Now putting this into context with the beginning of her writings it makes complete sense she found her horizon to push for and that she did.
in her poems she described ordinary things in ways they have probably never been described before. in ROOms she described hanging a picture as " A whole centre and a border make hanging a way of dressing" SHe perfers minimalizing sentences which was something i believe she was showing in her book How to Write. So she took an idea from futurism but made it her own. i thought the readings were quite difficult. They bounced around a lot and had tons of repetitions which made you have to read everything twice to really get any meaning out of it, but in an avante Garde style i think it was pretty brilliant. She brought more meaning to minimalization by dealing with a bigger variable such as the sentence and pargraphs. The Futurist really dealt with single words and even parts of words she took that idea and used a bigger variable thus giving herself the ability to practice minimalizing things while not losing too much meat so there is something there that can paint a picture much better that a root of a word could.
