11/9

Jackson Mac Low's statement, "The whole point of art is pleasure," while it is ambiguous, I think its a valid point; If something isn't enjoyably, what's its point in existing? Now, pleasure is the key word. People's pleasure is based on preference which is based on exposure. I agree completely with most of what he has to say on peoples preference ranging widely and therefore, the types of art ranging widely.
As we read more about poetry and the advances in it (which are few), I get more and more bored with the art form. Jackson's chance operations seem to be only an echo of the surrealists. The new structures seem to be a futile device; what about the structure is pleasurable? Is it only conceptually pleasurable? Because structure certainly doesn't add to the sound of the words, the vividness of the images, the rhythm of the piece, and the emotional association of a poem. This "Fuzzy Verse" style of structure seems to be confining (like any other traditional structure).
