Reading the Experimental Art article by Alan Kaprow interestd me. I related how he talks about artist needing to be careful not to conform to the "norms" of art to what we talk about in class because we are expected to think differently than how we have been trained. Kaprow says reverting to historical references is a bad thing for artist. Artist's work may become inhibited if they are relate it to something historical etc... This is why he makes the point about how artists need to "grab the bull by the tail." He believes they need to begin by recalling their personal beliefs about art, not with pre-existing styles and beliefs. Kaprow also makes an interesting point about artist's lifestyles. When they come up with a good idea is when they turn away from things which may interfere with their idea. Kaprows idea of what art should be is the same idea I have always held concerning artists and how they work. I guess being on the outside looking in, my perception of what happens in the artworld is probably inaccurate. It is good to read things like this to open my eyes to different subjects that are important even though I may not be interested in them.
