10/21

It seems strange to me that women were said to be involved in the Surrealist movement, but most of the women weren’t writers or artists. They didn’t really contribute to the art that the other Surrealists were creating. They participated in the experiments that they were doing on people sleeping. The women were the “sleepers.” Obviously women weren’t equal to men during this time, but the only way that most of these women were participating in the movement was through the fact that they were in relationships with the men of the movement. The women also weren’t involved in any of the protests or demonstrations that the men of the movement put on. At least there aren’t any published accounts of the women being involved in the protests. The women wanted a way to express themselves and this was one of the only ways that they would be able to express themselves, even if it was just a little bit.
