"Surrealism, such as I conceive of it, asserts our complete nonconformism clearly enough so that there can be no question of translating it, at the trial of the real world, as evidence for the defense."

I like this quote from the Surrealist Manifesto, it sums up how I feel about the surrealist movement. It is an art and literary form completely against conforming and continues to push against the real world. Huidobro has also suggested that the real world we see is a less clever description of what we already see. I believe that this is true. I mean you can say the grass is green. That is a realistic statement. A surrealist mind describe grass as an emerald carpet. It's the same thing, just better described in a surrealistic manner. I think surrealism is a test to our perception of the world around us. The more you can get "out of the box" the better chance you have of understanding surrealism.
