When I was reading Marinetti's piece, I was a bit shocked at the beginning. The piece was very detailed, thus creating very vivid images that I didn't expect. I realized there were lots of exclamatory remarks and comments geared towards women. At first I didn't realize the dates but then when I kept reading about women this and women that, I looked at the date and it made sense. It was dated in the early 1990's! Anyhow, these pieces felt like they were written today, now, in this moment for the modern day reader.
As for Higgins piece, it was more straightforward and to the point, therefore it was easier to follow. I especially liked the part about the artist's work in which the receiver takes the experience of the material and embraces it and becomes one and yet a different self. I am finding avante-garde to be really descriptive writing where the words the readers find themselves reading pops out of the pages and comes to life, especially with all the exclamation points!
The question I have is: How can one even differentiate between what is avante garde of the time and what is just a waste of time? How can one know that one is writing modern material when one is living in that time of age? How are some things that seem so simple, so complicated?
