9/22

This week’s reading was loooong. It’s a small book and the first couple of pages fly by, but after the first 10 pages or so, it is tedious to try to read and understand what Gertrude Stein is saying. She uses repetition everywhere. She repeats words, phrases and sounds; sometimes three times in a row. What is written on the page seems like it shouldn’t be difficult to grasp, because the words are fairly simple, but because of the way she has them arranged, it can be confusing and becomes complicated. Her writing has a sense of being strategically random and nonsensical, which I feel might be kind of the point. I liked that her writing seemed to have a sense of rhythm that I didn’t feel some of the other things we’ve read did.
