Gertrude Stein, perhaps under the influence of Kurchenykh and the Russian Futurists, extends the scope of futurist/zaum poetry in to the English language. She chooses to be very minimalistic, even simplistic, in her word choice; She chooses to repeat words, both at the beginning of a sentence, and the end of the preceding sentence. This gives her poetry a sing-songy, rhythmic feel. These aspects of her writing remind me of children’s rhymes such as mother goose. What could her rationality be on this type of writing? One could say that children have a more objective view of the world, and if they find catchy poems of more interest, then its best to incorporate that aspect in to a ore mature context.
