Surrealism is a very interesting movement. They obviously focus mostly on the imagination and the effect that imagination has on any individual. One of the most interesting paragraphs in the first Surrealism Manifesto is when they begin talking about people that have been incarcerated. It seemed like they were almost excusing these people’s behavior because they were “mad” and couldn’t help themselves. They were living in their imagination and couldn’t control the thoughts they were having. It also seemed like they were saying in that same paragraph that madness is an important part of the imagination; that a person can’t necessarily use their imagination to the full extent and not be mad.
The way that the sentences are written makes it a little difficult to understand exactly what they’re attempting to say. It seems like they’ll make a statement and then backtrack and almost retract what they had just said. It also makes it difficult to follow the different points that they’re attempting to make.
