Dada

After reading the Dada poetry, I was, to be honest, relieved. I definitely struggled with Stein and the Dada poems were somewhat of a reassurance. Also, everybody’s blog was a reassurance for me. It seems like the responses were much more interested and like everybody had understood it better. I feel that the poetry appealed to our cognitive interests as well some personal interests. With Stein and some futurism, at least in my case, some of the work went through one ear and out the other. This didn’t make for a very exciting read all of the time. At least with this week’s reading, everybody seems to comprehend more so than last and can really contribute to legitimate conversation about the work. I really love the visceral energy presented by the Dadaists and their anti-war themes. The raw intensity and lively presentation of words and emotions were great. I think when writers present their works in such violent or intense way it really makes for a cathartic reading. I read once that Jim Morrison intended to create extremely vivid, violent, and imaginative lyrics that the audience would leave the concert having experienced some sort of catharsis. I think that’s what real art really is: to be so affecting and jolting that it is like a cleansing of the soul. I could see the Dadaist poetry having the same effect on people.
